I had a nice surprise Saturday morning as I checked out the Weekend edition paper.
I had three large cover photographs with: the poutine feature on the cover of the Detour section, the cover of the sports section with the Manitoba Moose photo, and the cover of the Entertainment section with the Opera photograph.

I recently shot some food photography for some upcoming additions to The Lobby on York's menu. I understand some of these will be on the menu very soon. I got to try some of the dishes, and they were unreal. By the time we were finished shooting the steak, it was cold, but still one of the tastiest steaks I've ever had. Be sure to check out the restaurant, it's one of the best restaurants in Winnipeg. Website: The Lobby on York.

A Westjet airplane lands on apartment building!?!

No not really. But it sure looked like it.

I was in the middle of photographing a cross country ski and snoeshoe workshop, when I saw a WestJet airplane coming in for a landing at Winnipeg James Armstrong Richardson International Airport. It looked like it would line up with the roofline of an apartment building so, I quickly swung the camera around and quickly shot a couple frames.

This is how the photo ran in the newspaper the next day. It was a little funny that the photo ran right next to an article about a smaller aircraft that had to make an emergency landing!

I was a little disappointed that none of the great skiing photographs ran, as this photo ran pretty big instead at 4 columns.

The caption (I didn't write) that ran with the photo in Mondays A3 newspaper page read:

"A WestJet plane lands atop a Winnipeg apartment building Sunday so the pilot can stop at his suite for a quick bite... NOT! The effect is just an optical illusion created by the plane's angle and altitude in flight, as seen from the Living Prairie Museum."

I have a couple of photographs in the brand new Canadian television commercials for the new Nikon D7000 & D3100 DSLR cameras. You may have seen them if you watched the Victorias Secret fashion show Tuesday night.

Ozzy Osbourne brings the crazy to Winnipeg - Winnipeg Concert Photographer

Ozzy was in town Saturday November 20, 2010, playing the MTS Centre on a chilly Saturday in Winnipeg.

There were three photographers photographing the first 3 songs of the show. MTS Centre photographer Dan Harper, Winnipeg Sun photographer Marcel Cretain, and myself for the Winnipeg Free Press. We were all warned prior to the show that Ozzy has a foam gun, and would be spraying the crowd in either the 3rd or 4th song. We were also told that if he saw a photographer at the front, he won't hesitate, and in fact, Ozzy enjoys spraying photographers. Just prior to the show Marcel joked to me that he would stay up front and get sprayed if I would put him on the cover of the Free Press (the direct competition to the Winnipeg Sun).

When the third song started playing, Dan Harper and I cautiously stayed up front, while Marcel played it safe shooting with a long lens from the side of the stage. About 3/4 into the third song (Mr. Crowley) Ozzy still had not picked up the foam gun, so Marcel came back to the front of the stage to continue shooting with us. About 30 seconds later Ozzy turned around, picked up the foam gun, and started spraying the crowd.

My decision to stay at the front for the third song, knowing full well that Ozzy could and would enjoy spraying us was due to my thinking that I could easily outrun a 61 year old Ozzy Osbourne. As soon as I saw him reach for the foam gun/hose, I bolted to the side of the stage, running right into one of the security guards in the process (it was like running into a brick wall). After I was safely out of what I thought was the reach of Ozzy's foam gun, I shot the above frame of Ozzy spraying the crowd. A moment later, Ozzy spotted Dan at the very front of the stage trying to blend in with the giant speakers, and front a few feet directly above him, released the foam, soaking him from head to toe, including both of his Nikon cameras!

I continued shooting frames of Ozzy on stage foaming the crowd, and as the 3rd song (and last song we were allowed to shoot) winded down, I ran back to the front of the stage to grab some shots of the crowd that was now white with foam (which made the cover of the Sunday newspaper) slipping all around the foam covered floor in the process.

Here are some aftermath photos of Dan and his cameras (Nikon D3 w/ 14-24 f/2.8 & Nikon D3X w/70-200 f/2.8 VRII for the gearheads). I gotta say that Dan took it surprisingly well. I would have been just a wee bit mad and probably a little vocal about it. We will see how well the Nikon weatherproofing holds up...

Michael Bublé performed in Winnipeg at the MTS Centre Friday August 13, 2010 as part of his Crazy Love tour.
Photographing the first three songs for the Winnipeg Free Press, the access wasn't great as there was no room to move at all, and was shooting from the soundboard in the middle of the area, hundreds of feet away.

Jonathan Toews brings the Stanley Cup home to Winnipeg.

Spent a long day Sunday July 11, 2010 following and photographing Chicago Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews as he brought the Stanley Cup and the Conn Smythe Trophy back home to Winnipeg. The day started at the Legislature Building where Premier Greg Sellinger officially announced that a Manitoba lake was named Toews Lake. Afterwards Toews made his way to City Hall where Mayor Sam Katz led a ceremony in which Jonathan Toews was presented with the key to the city. The day ended with a parade to the Dakota Community centre where Toews played hockey as a kid. After the parade, the community centre was renamed to Jonathan Toews Community Centre. The photography had some great coverage in the newspaper the next day with the cover of the paper, as well as a full page on the front of the City & Business section (cell phone photos of coverage). Here are some images I like, some ran in the paper, some did not.

It has been a good winter for hoarfrost this year. I knew coming home late Saturday night that the thick fog would lend itself well to hoarfrost Sunday morning. Between covering crime scenes during my 9-5 Winnipeg Free Press shift, I managed to spend about half an hour photographing some hoarfrost at a couple places around the city.

EDDIE "THE EAGLE" EDWARDS SOARS AGAIN IN WINNIPEG

The Olympic Flame came through Winnipeg last week. I covered a lot of the first day for the Winnipeg Free Press, including following the Olympic Torch to Dugald, MB, Selkirk, MB, as well as the lighting of the Olympic Cauldron at the Forks that night.

On the last day of it's stay in Manitoba, I photographed 1988 Calgary Olympics folk-hero / first British ski-jumper ever, Eddie "the Eagle" Edwards for the Canadian Press / Associated Press.

Eddie is the first to admit it, he can't believe he is still riding this media train more than 20 years later. My photographs of him were picked up everywhere, including the New York Times / Los Angeles Times (Olympic blog coverage): Los Angeles Times

With all of the crazy Olympic Torch coverage, a few shots didn't make it to print that I liked.

1. The Winnipeg landmark, the Esplanade Riel was lit up with colour for the first time.

2. Kids were excited to see the Olympic flame in rural Manitoba

Justin Bieber in Winnipeg

Last week I was shooting a Moose game at the MTS Centre, when I saw on the JumboTron, 15-year-old teen singing sensation Justin Bieber, wishing Winnipegers "happy holidays". I quickly scanned all of the private boxes around the rink, found where they were filming from, and grabbed a few shots from my seat with the 300mm lens (shown below)

I quickly filed my action shots from the Moose game, and threw the shot of Bieber in there as well. My phone rang seconds later, and it was the Photo Desk asking if this was an exclusive shot (it was, as I was the only photographer to take the shot). They said that this is likely going to be the cover shot for the paper the next day. I said that I didn't think it was the greatest shot, and asked If I could try to get a closer shot.

Long story short, with the help of the MTS centre VIP guest services liaisons, I was allowed to photograph Justin Bieber with his father, and that shot made the cover of the Winnipeg Free Press the next day.

Bison @ Fort Whyte Alive

I was photographing the book launch of "Human Nature - The Fort Whyte Story" at Fort Whyte Alive the other day, and walked up to the Bison pit prior to the event, and some bisons ran towards me. Apparently they must like me, as usually when humans approach the Bisons leave in the opposite direction. This was shot very wide @ 17mm.

2009 NDP Leadership Convention

I was assigned to cover the 2009 NDP Leadership Convention @ the Convention Centre, where Greg Selinger won, and as such is the Premier-elect of Manitoba.

First up, Steve Ashton had a much more lively speech which made for a lot better photos than of Selinger.

I was a fly on the wall with MB Premier Gary Doer

Gary Doer resigned as Premier of Manitoba, and I had the opportunity to follow him around on Friday, which was his last business day in office (technically today was his last official day). The day started with a haircut on Academy, and ended with a farewell tribute dinner, thrown by the NDP @ the Convention Centre.

I had a very rare opportunity to photograph the swearing in of a Chief Judge, and two Associate Chief Judges @ The Court of Queen's Bench, on October 8, 2009.

A familiar face to many Winnipegers, I photographed The Christmas Cheer Board's Kai Madsen again, unfortunately this time, it was because the Cheer board was in trouble, as they are still looking for a space for their operations this year.

On October 10th, Winnipeg's funniest comic competition was held @ MyBar. Ten wacky Winnipeggers walk into a bar but just one of them would walk home with the coveted title of Winnipeg's funniest amateur comic. The big story with the Manitoba Moose, has been the new player sent down from the Vancouver Canucks, Sergei Shirokov (#52), who played his first game with the Moose against the Chicago Wolves Friday October 9, 2009 at the MTS Centre.

Here is some work that appeared/was published this past week.

Though this advertisement was shot a while ago, it was announced this week that Frazier would be returning to Winnipeg to rejoin Beau & Tom on 99.9 BOB FM. This photograph was taken during a break between the shooting of this TV commercial

I was on my way to a shoot for A&W when the phone rang from The Canadian Press, asking 'how fast I could make it to the legislature?' Apparently there an impromptu news conference under way. I made a 5 minute stop, and made it to the next shoot 5 minutes early, score! Gary Doer announced his resignation, and these photos had some decent play the next day including this Winnipeg Sun cover photo, a frame in the Winnipeg Free Press, a tiny photo in The Globe & Mail, as well as appearing in ~15 other newspapers/news sources across Canada.

Like the BOB shoot, these were shot a while ago, but this final poster is finally hanging in Sobeys stores across western Canada. It was extremely hot shooting in the Natural Bakery, but the images look great.

Winnipeg Free Press cover from the the AC/DC concert from the night before. Like always, I had the first 3 songs to photograph, and no use of a flash. Though the lighting was pretty impressive, it was still darker than I would have liked, they were shot at ISO 1250, but they look great.

I was very lucky that I had the opportunity to photograph the AC/DC concert at Canad Inns Stadium in Winnipeg last night, Saturday August 22, 2009, for the Winnipeg Free Press

Warehouse One Fall 09 Behind the Scenes Video

I assisted Ian McCausland for the Warehouse One Fall 09 fashion campaign that is now out in full swing. The final photographs look amazing in the newspaper insert, huge posters hanging in the stores, and on the website.

Winnipegger Meaghan Waller Wins Canada's Next Top Model

It turns out that I photographed the winner of Canada's Next Top Model, season 3, Meaghan De Warrenne-Waller, as I was shooting streetstyle for the Winnipeg Free Press, back in February. I had spotted her inside American Apparel, when I went inside to warm up after spending too long in the crazy cold temperatures of -30C. Turns out she worked there, but I got her to come outside for a quick shot.

"Just a month before Waller auditioned for Canada's Next Top Model, the Free Press happened to photograph and interview her in Osborne Village for its Streetstyle feature in the Detour section. She looked like a model already (inset photo, left)" - Winnipeg Free Press (Thursday July 16, 2009)

Its a cool style of racing, as anyone can win.

First crit of the year. I used to race these, and I always thought they were the hardest bicycle race. This is because there is a lot of hard braking and fast accelerating in and out of the corners. I remember saying after the first race, that I wish I crashed into a tree, as then the pain of the race would be over.

First road race of the year

I decided to photograph the first road race (ITT) of the year, instead of race it. I've only gone for a few road rides this year, as I've been mostly riding my new mountain bike, a dual suspension rig that weights twice as much as the road bike!

A couple random shots. First, an outtake from the last moose game that I shot, "#19's collide". Second a fancy smancy new Trek Bike, no, not mine (i'm starting to consider getting a fancy new mountain bike, if anything). A very, very simple lighting setup for the bike, one SB800 bounced. Perhaps a little too much spill on the background, but I think it works.

Had a busy couple of days, still catching up on some editing.

-Friday night shift for the Free Press

-Went up north to volunteer sandbag on Sunday

-Headshots on Monday.

Shot a Moose game on the Friday shift, the Moose won in OT.

An estimated 2M damage to my old faculty building, after a fire broke out in the Duff Roblin building @ the University of Manitoba. The building houses both Psychology & Zoology. The preliminary report suggests that a faulty fridge power cord started the fire. A mass evacuation wreaked havoc for students that were working on assignments for the end of the academic year. Ran into a bunch of friends & classmates that were forced out of the campus.

Still sore from the sandbagging north of Selkirk, MB.

Long day

Friday February 1, 2009

Started the day by loading the studio into the little car. 12ft background, studio lights, etc...

Show up at U of M and set up studio for portrait shoot with Sex-talk host Sue Johanson for The Manitoban.

11:30 AM: After waiting around for a while, long story short, she thought set-up portraits were artificial and didn't really want a part of it. To add to that she was opposed to the concept I had planned, so I didn't get what I wanted. Tough room!

Noon: Photograph her on stage.

On the way home to drop off my gear I shot the first assignment for my 2-10 shift for the Winnipeg Free Press.

1 PM: Audio Visual Unlimited is closing their doors.

Drop off gear at home, have a quick lunch.

2:30 PM: My City, My Song finalist: photograph band 'Zamboni Joe' at the forks. We were going to just take a shot of them on the ice under the tent, until we saw a zamboni filling up with water. Turns out I know the driver, and he let us take shots with it down on the river after it filled up with water.

3:15: My City, My Song 2nd place: Sierra Noble. She is very talented, I have photographed her before performing live at the forks at least once.

4:00 PM: Swimmer Chantal Van Landeghem. Remember that name. She is only 14 years old and has won a ton of medals and has broken many records! She is also very tall! Following this assignment, I went through the images, and selected the ones to edit and file. No time to actually edit or file, but saved some time for later in the night.

5:30 PM: Picture of a couple that is looking at buying a home, shot for the Money matters section.

6:30 PM: Shoot a standup of the Mike Keanne bobble head giveaway for the first 5000 to walk through the doors. That was a fun one; fighting through the crowds to get in before they opened the doors! Managed to grab a quick dinner while I edited and filed the aforementioned assignments.

7:30 PM: Manitoba Moose game Vs. Rockford Icehogs. They dominated the first period, and the period went by very fast without a ton of action. Photographed every single hit against the boards hoping there would be a good facial expression or body position. Got a decent frame (see below), but hoped for more action, a goal, or a fight. Lucked out with a fight, but not the best fight pictures I've taken this year.

9:15 PM: Photograph guests boarding the BadaBing party bus.

Went home and edited and filed the last assignment. 10 assignments for the day over 12 hours total. Not even close to the busiest day ( I think that was 15 assignments over 16 hours on a crazy hot July day last summer).

Beer me! This photo ran in the Winnipeg Free Press in B&W, I think it lost its hilarity that way. Here it is in colour.

Prime Minister's visit to Winnipeg

I was happy to finally photograph the Prime Minister. I have been asked to photograph past visits to Winnipeg, but scheduling conflicts didn't allow me to take the assignments until Friday, when I photographed Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper on two occasions on his visit to Winnipeg. I was on assignment from the Canadian Press.

I packed my gear for a typical day of shooting journalism type work with: 2 bodies, 300 f/2.8, 70-200 f/2.8 VR, 18-50 f/2.8, and 50 f/1.4, laptop. I used everything but the 50 f/1.4 which stayed in the bag with the backup body.

The first stop was at the Forks where Harper broke ground and spoke at the future site of the Canadian Museum for Human Rights, and the second stop was at a business round table meeting at the Delta hotel. Harper spoke for ~5 mins at the forks and broke ground with other dignitaries. Interesting things to note was that this event was held in a tent, and it was a very nice surprise when I got inside and it was very warm. Only surprising because outside it was close to -30, and with the windchill it was -40 C. There were so many members of the media in the little area set up for us that they had to break ground twice because there wasn't enough room for everyone to capture the ground breaking, so they staged it twice. On the later roundtable event in the afternoon the media were given about 15 seconds to photograph, all I heard Harper say something along the lines of "I'm sorry for being late, but i'm happy to be here", before being ushered out of the tiny room (to give you an idea of how small the room really was, I couldn't fit the three tables in the frame from a straight on angle at 18mm).

Luc Bourdon

This photo ran a little while ago fairly small on the cover of the Winnipeg Free Press, and another vertical image ran with the article regarding the tribute to a young hockey player, Luc Bourdon, that died in a motorcycle accident in Lamèque, New Brunswick on May 29, 2008. I believe that both the Vancouver Canucks as well as the Manitoba Moose will be wearing tributes on their helmets(Canucks), and patches on their jerseys (Moose). Due to space issues, this photo didn't get to run as large as some would have liked, so I'll put it up larger here.

the Macbeth card

I just found these as I was cleaning up the computer, so I put together a collage of all of the different ways I held the Macbeth card while assisting Ian McCausland's (www.ian.ca) Nygard shoot at TenSpa. These were taken during the hours of 8pm through 2am on one very windy night.

Last regular season Bomber game

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers closed out the regular season with a win. Following are 19 images from the game (*ya might want to give it a minute or two to load).

For those that don't know, I'm originally from Hamilton, and I always enjoy this match-off. The Ti-cats didn't play so well this time though.

This game seemed to play out a lot slower than usual, with a ton of injuries (mostly on the Hamilton side). Winnipeg dominated the game, and the 3rd and 4th string QB's even got a chance to play (#10 Bryan Randall & #17 Timmy Chang).

Yup thats right, the leaves have fallen and the temperatures hover around 0 C. That can only mean one thing, it's cyclocross season. If you don't know what cyclocross is, check out the wiki page here: here

Like the title says, you guys love naked people, specifically naked people riding bikes!

I had shot the World Naked Bike Ride event for the Winnipeg Free Press (link to the original post including more photographs: http://lipnowski.blogspot.com/2008/06/world-naked-bike-ride-wnbr.html)

Visitors to the blog are coming in from everywhere, with one thing in common, looking for pictures of naked people riding bikes. Most have found the blog through google images searching for " world, naked, bike, ride, pictures, photographs,"

2 days with the Moose!

Just came off of two days as part of Mark Messier's entourage.

I don't have the rights to display the photographs on here, but here is a pic of me with the Moose. A photo ran in today's Winnipeg Free Press, and was credited to "Submitted Photo", and a different photo ran in the Winnipeg Sun today, and was credited to "The Canadian Press"

Over the two days I attended a bunch of press conferences where Mark talked about the importance of hockey moms, as well as the product, COLD-FX which he uses and promotes. I also attended a skate with Mark Messier event in which some lucky children got to play a friendly game with Mark. The highlight of the 2 days was documenting the 'goings-on' in the private box at the NHL exhibition game (Phoenix Coyotes VS. Calgary Flames). There were quite a few big shots in the box including the Premier, Mark Messier, LeVar Burton (Reading Rainbow / Star Trek), and James Van Der Beek (Dawson's Creek), BTW: all four are very nice guys.
